5 Facts About… Popstar Miso Extra

Between anime recommendations, her favourite dish and her brand new album, we check out Miso Extra and her brand new album, Earcandy.

1) Her musical inspirations are as diverse as her upbringing.

Following a childhood in Hong Kong and Japan, and now based in the UK, her artistic influences are as eclectic as Chaka Khan, MF Doom and her love of anime, and people who catch her shows are always guaranteed a unique and unforgettable show.

2) She has her own creative universe, the Misoverse.

The Misoverse is a term she uses to sum up all of her artistic explorations, and focuses on a world that celebrates love and inclusivity.

As she tells us: “I think helps to kind of better explain what’s going and what’s going on with my creative output. I feel like you see that a lot in kind of anime and game as well, this idea of it being like an alternate reality or the idea of even kind of having like a name for your mind palace.”

3) Her debut album, Earcandy, dropped earlier this year.

Featuring hits such as ‘POP’, ‘Good Kisses’ and ‘Love Train’, her album is a must-listen for all those who enjoy breezy, electric, feel good pop: it’s the perfect, must-listen album for your summer, and features her singing in English and Japanese.

“I imagine it’s like sending your kid off to school for the first time, right?” she says of its release. “Where it’s like, you’re really excited for it. But you are kind of very… still kind of in that protective phase… but I’m quietly excited!”

4) She is a big fan of anime and animation in general.

Some of her current favourites include Detective Conan, The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today, and Oshi No Ko.

5) She calls her music ‘umami for the soul’.

Says Extra: ‘It just makes sense that it’s another play on words to do with kind of food and sound […] just like nuggets of delicious sound, and I think […] ‘Oh, yeah, that’s addictive. I want to listen to that little thing again.’ Or just like… little Easter eggs in songs.”

As for her favourite dish? “I love ikura don!”
