My favourite thing from working on Shanghai Dolls is… collaborating with the wonderful creatives and cast.
What I hope resonates the most with the audience from Shanghai Dolls is… that no one is born a monster.
One behind-the-scenes fun fact or story from Shanghai Dolls is… the our assistant stage manager who is from China has lovingly written every letter/confession/military pass in 1930 style Chinese with the proper paper and format. And has also recreated books from that era. Also that the jitterbug scene is set to my grandmother’s favourite song “Rose Rose I love you”.
A song I would recommend right now is… “Boundless Oceans Vast Skies” by Hong Kong band Beyond.
A TV show/movie I would recommend right now is… Wong Kar Wai’s BLOSSOMS SHANGHAI
One piece of advice I would give my younger self is… don’t be so harsh on yourself.
What I love most about my heritage is… the colour, vividness and zany energy of the Cantonese language.
You’re in a zombie apocalypse; what is your weapon of choice, and why? A durian. It has a very spiky hard shell that can do a lot of damage; and although I love the smell of it, people have been known to faint.
To me, diversity means… acceptance and celebration of difference.
