Jisoo is just as classy as before her newest mini-album AMORTAGE, looking her best in business glam for promo and crowned with her signature deep brown waves. Presenting the release is title song ‘earthquake’, a deep house dance track with a minor key hook that you just can’t get enough of: “It hits me like an earthquake”. The song is accompanied by a simple but glossy music video starring herself and actor Cha Seung-won, featuring an interrogation, an earthquake at the office, and a miniaturised dancebreak atop a lie detector, all while she musters the courage to reply to the one who’s got her feeling fluttery. It’s simply fabulous.
We’ve known Jisoo was the queen of toying with her own passaggio; elegant and devoted, this technique of intentional voice breaking was previously best seen in her parts on BLACKPINK’s mega-hit ‘Kill This Love’, and it’s an ear-tickler each time you catch it. ‘Hugs & Kisses’ is your best new reference point for this addictive trait of Jisoo’s vocals, being one of the strongest tracks on the mini album, along with ‘earthquake’. It’s got quite a 2010’s pop feel to it, in entirely the best way possible. The Shawn Mendes-y guitar bassline and dolphin-like voice effect we thought we’d seen the last of in 2019 work really well with Jisoo’s style, and are gentle enough to not overpower the singing.

Lyrically, ‘Your Love’ stands out best, with poetic words that feel specific enough to have been taken from the heart: “Your love feels like the rain, feels like a song I used to know / And your love feels like the way there’s only green lights driving home / Your love feels likе a Sunday whеn you got nowhere to go”. On the other hand, ‘TEARS’’ genius is in the way its percussion lines the chorus just perfectly, so that it’s impossible to not sing along each time Jisoo exclaims: “Cheers!”
Even though the album art and name teased something a bit avant-garde, AMORTAGE is akin to a collection of comfortable pop: giving all the glory to Jisoo’s own capabilities. It feels like a hug. Ultimately, four songs from Jisoo is simply not enough, so you’ll be spending many minutes clicking repeat all over again, a welcomed trap of her own design.
AMORTAGE is out now. JISOO can be found on Instagram here and on all streaming platforms.
