&ASIAN sits down with filmmaker Rohan Parashuram Kanawade, the award-winning writer and director of Cactus Pears (Sabar Bonda), the stunning Marathi-language queer drama that has been garnering love from audiences worldwide.

Rohan discusses bringing queer love stories to the screen, the beauty of sound design, portraying queer stories with authenticity, and how his experiences with grief brought him to this story.

Cactus Pears (Sabar Bonda) follows Anand, who returns to his ancestral village during a period of mourning. Here, he reconnects with a childhood friend, leading to an intimate exploration of love, grief and belonging. The film had its premiere at Sundance and took home the festival’s Grand Jury Prize.
