Beattie has been making waves as a British artist whose brooding, poetic lyrics have been illuminating our modern Gothic alt-pop dreams.
Before you check her riveting work, here’s five fun facts about the up-and-comer.
1. Her debut project’s title came from an earlier song.
The gorgeously named All My Innocence Has Been Ridden was a lyric in an introductory track called “Innocence”. She originally wanted to call the record Innocence. Either way, it’s a beautiful 15 minute fever dream through love, pain and wading through messy emotions.
2. Her gothic image isn’t a performance: it’s an extension of how she’s always dressed.
She’s worn eyeliner every day since she was 12, and she and her four siblings have long favoured wearing black. Every generation needs their gothic queens, and Beattie’s flying the flag.
3. Her lyrics emerge spontaneously rather than through over-crafting.
Beattie’s become deeply appreciated for her evocative and witty lyrics. But these aren’t written by committee or with some magic formula. Even the fun reference to relying on Co–Star in “The Poet” came from her train of thought and trying to understand someone else’s feelings.
4. Some great artists have helped shape her into who she is today.
She’s already been compared to some musical greats such as a Jeff Buckley, Lana Del Rey, Lorde and more. While she doesn’t overthink such massive comparisons, Beattie does recognise Lana’s influence in her metaphorical writing. However, she doesn’t consciously set out to make songs that sound like another artist.
5. She considers “Life With Her” her most cinematic song.
With her floaty, brooding, Brontë-pop sound, it can’t been took long before her music is featured on some blockbuster historical romance film. When asked which track she’d pair with a Brontë novel, she chose ‘Life With Her’. While we think many a Beattie song suits a sweeping evening on the moors, that song is a heart-wrenching choice for a first time listener.
Her latest EP, Inside My Mind, is out now. Beattie can be found on Instagram under @beatt1e, and on all major streaming platforms.
