Rising Japanese singer-songwriter Ako has captured the hearts of fans with her unique vocals and bold concepts, including with her latest album, lovely moments. Following the album release, we chatted with Ako about the album, an in-depth look at the songs, and her experiences as a singer.
The music video for “Love Was Born” features striking stop-motion animation. What was that experience like, and were there any particular challenges?
The concept came from watching the Clubbers Guide to 2000 video. I remember thinking, “I really want to create something like this,” so I pitched the idea to the director. He immediately responded with enthusiasm: “Let’s do it!” That’s how it started.
I’d always thought stop-motion must be incredibly difficult to execute, so I was thrilled when he agreed to take on the challenge. Director Kei Murotani, producer IYO, and the entire team worked tirelessly on set to bring the vision to life. Their dedication made it all possible. In an era where AI is advancing so rapidly, I think it’s wonderful that we chose to create something entirely handmade. That choice feels really special.
As a singer, you have a distinctive, hushed vocal style that is truly impactful and mesmerising. Which artists have influenced your development as a singer?
Billie Eilish was the artist who introduced me to whisper-style vocals. Her singing has had an enormous influence on me. I was also greatly inspired by the dream pop movement that gained popularity around 2020. Artists like Men I Trust, The Marías, and Clairo taught me a lot, particularly through their vocal approach and delivery.
“Turn It Up” and “MOVE MOVE” appear to be listener favorites on the “Lovely Moments.” Do you have a personal favorite track on the album?
“Turn It Up” was definitely a challenge for me. As a musician, my goal has always been to create pop music that feels fresh and unprecedented. This song brought me closer to that ambition. That said, if I had to choose my favorite from the album, it would be “Still There.” I love its gentle sound, and it’s the track where I managed to capture the most precious moments of my life.
What motivates you before performing or recording? Are there any pre-show or pre-recording rituals that you have?
For the JUNO TOUR, I practiced more intensively than ever before. Before each show, I’d reflect on all that preparation and use it to build confidence and motivation. I also watched live videos of my favorite artists and imagined performing at their level. (Laughs)
Before recording, I don’t really follow any special routines. I mostly just focus on making last-minute arrangement decisions in the moment.
Your album is titled “Lovely Moments.” What was the most special moment you experienced during the creation process?
“Love Was Born” was written during my first co-write camp. We all travelled to a studio in Izu overlooking the ocean, played cards during breaks, and shared drinks together. It was an incredibly fun and special time. That said, as someone who prefers being indoors, I was happy with just that one experience. Maybe it was so memorable precisely because it was a once-in-a-lifetime event.
“Magic,” the fourth track, features chipmunk soul elements and gorgeous percussion. What musical references inspired this composition?
The song draws from several musical influences. The breathing sounds were inspired by PinkPantheress, while the chipmunk soul elements came from Basement Jaxx. There were also many influences from UK artists woven throughout.
What’s your favorite lyric that you wrote for this album?
My favorite lyrics come from “Still There”: “Sunday, I’ll hold the days we found beneath the sunshine close to my heart forever, and I want to take them with me all the way to heaven, and be there with you together.”
If you could describe “Lovely Moments” in three words, what would they be?
Love, Serenity, and Aggressiveness.
What’s the ideal listening environment for your album?
I’d love for people to listen while relaxing. For me personally, it’s best enjoyed with a cup of tea in hand.
How does “Lovely Moments” differ from your first album, “GENE”?
“GENE” was very introspective—a conversation with myself. “Lovely Moments,” by contrast, is about love for others and the special moments created through those relationships. Compared to “GENE,” this album looks outward rather than inward. It’s a more expansive perspective.
