SM Entertainment Signs Exclusive Contract With Soprano Royalty Sumi Jo

SM Entertainment has made a huge step by signing an exclusive contract with soprano royalty for their label SM Classics, and the activity starts with her 40th anniversary celebration.

In 2020, SM Entertainment created the label “SM Classics,” in a collaboration between the company and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, to release songs in orchestral arrangements. As part of the company’s desire for global expansion within the classical genre, SM Entertainment announced the signing of acclaimed soprano Sumi Jo to an exclusive contract with SM Classics.

It is a huge gain for the company as Jo is known as one of the “greatest sopranos” of this generation, and there are already plans set in place as the singer is set to release her special 40th anniversary album Continuum in May.

Jo made her debut in Italy in 1986, performing on some of the most prestigious stages, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Vienna State Opera, La Scala in Milan, and the Royal Opera House in London, among many others.

The album will commemorate her debut anniversary, looking at her past, present, and future with eleven tracks. In particular, after so long in the industry, Jo is showing off her talent but also bringing in other huge names, including contributions from renowned composers, including Yiruma, Jong Hoon Park, Jin Hwan Kim, Jin Choi, Young Hwan Ko, Ja Eun Yoon, and Takatsugu Muramatsu, with the music being conducted by Young-sun Choi and performed by the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra. There is also a guest appearance from renowned violinist Danny Koo.

Yet, it also has a classic SM Entertainment twist as the album also includes a duet with EXO’s Suho.

When asked about the album, Sumi Jo spoke about the meaning behind the release.

“This album represents both the culmination of a long journey and the beginning of a new chapter. My music has never remained in one place, it continues to evolve toward new possibilities. I wanted to create a work that honors classical heritage while embracing modern artistic expression.”

While explaining that her desire to explore and expand Korean classical music globally led to partnering with SM Entertainment, the singer also spoke about the more technical aspects of the album.

“Continuum brings together some of the most technically demanding coloratura repertoire I’ve yet to record, alongside works by contemporary composers. It bridges classical heritage with a modern sensibility, exploring new artistic directions rather than staying within the familiar. That spirit is at the heart of how I approach music.”

It is also a huge opportunity for SM Classics, as shared by the CEO Hee Kyung Jo.

“With Sumi Jo’s signing, we are taking a meaningful step toward building a globally competitive classical label rooted in Korean artistry. SM Classics will continue investing in world-class talent and developing innovative projects that expand the reach of classical music worldwide.”

It isn’t just the album that Sumi Jo is using to celebrate her career. She continues to perform worldwide, and after appearances at Cadogan Hall and Carnegie Hall, the singer is set to start a nationwide Korean tour in May. Following that, she will also host the second Sumi Jo International Vocal Competition in July at Château de la Ferté-Imbault in France. It showcases that, alongside personal progression, the singer wants to nurture and help the future of the genre.

While Sumi Jo has had a 40-year career with awards and historic performances, her new venture with SM Classics is something that is fresh and exciting.
