On October 2nd, Mark Tuan made a comeback with his track “NIGHTLIGHT,” treating fans not only to a new song but also to the surprise that it would be a collaboration with popular Thai artist MILLI.
Ahead of the release, Mark shared teasers to give fans a glimpse of what to expect. With the teaser photos, he didn’t give much away, aside from hinting at something sexy and dark.
This was emphasised with the video teaser.
From the very beginning, “NIGHTLIGHT” is a song that shows Mark’s colours, rather than what we saw when he was an idol. The long intro has a great R&B feel, utilising sound effects and low bass to get fans into the track’s vibe. Mark’s vocals then come in, adding the overall feel he seemingly wants fans to experience, before he goes into his own rap. Even without seeing anything, something about Mark’s voice is sexy and smooth.
While Mark is multi-talented, showcasing his vocals and rap throughout the song, the addition of MILLI’s voice adds another layer. Known for her own rapping skills, MILLI’s higher rap tone is a breath of fresh air in the song, and in particular, it’s nice to hear her vocalisations harmonising with Mark and ad-libbing as the song continues.
The song ends with Mark’s voice alone, and with the continued effects in the background, it might seem repetitive with the words and melody, but it actually makes it catchier and more memorable. It is a track that brings together all of Mark’s strengths as an artist.
Combining the song with the simple yet impactful video also enhances its aura. The video sees Mark in various locations, from a hotel, an event hall, and outside, setting the singer in different scenarios.
One of the most noticeable parts of the video is the changes from narrative to choreography. A lot of the video shows Mark and his dancers performing classic, laid-back choreography in various settings, but this is interspersed with small, effective clips of the storyline, setting the mood with Mark and leaving it up to fans to interpret the narrative in their own way. Ending outside with a proper choreography scene with the dancers emphasises the mysterious mood that has been set throughout, with added sexiness and sophistication.
Mark never fails to put himself into every release, creating a sexy and mature vibe throughout the track.
