SF9 have returned with their second full album, and, in the best way to celebrate a decade since their 2016 debut, aptly titled it Tenacity.
Many fans were anticipating how the group would celebrate their 10th anniversary. SF9 did not disappoint, as they announced not only a new album but also a whole set of activities and special plans for FANTASY on the road to October 5th, the day they debuted.
On August 26th, Tenacity was officially released.
The title track, “Without Wings,” feels like it transcends any genre. Although the beat is strong and evokes a sombre feeling, the amapiano instrumental adds a summer feel to the song, balancing sadness and hope. In the past, it felt like the vocalists were in control, but this song sees all the members have equal parts.
Rappers Hwiyoung, Chani, and Youngbin are seemingly taking a lead role in the song, showcasing their vocals. In particular, for a fan, the song evokes a sense of nostalgia, with the video bringing together moments from past music videos. There were the rain scenes from “Bibora,” the settings for “Don’t Worry Be Happy” and “Love Race,” and the burning sun seen in many of the group’s past songs. The darker colour palette throughout creates a sense of nostalgia and emotions, perfect for such a unique track.
“Curtain Call” opens with Chani’s soft vocals, followed by Hwiyoung’s rich voice; the song feels much sexier when paired with the melody. As the song progresses, the beat slowly increases, adding more instruments and effects before the chorus changes into a more dance-pop track. The faster beat then continues, but the intensity decreases as Youngbin’s vocals come in. Alongside the members, the intricacies of the melody and arrangement make the song impactful.
“PRESSURE” uses light and shade throughout the verses and chorus, varying pace and intensity to build layers in the song. Compared to the first two tracks, this song makes more use of rap to blend in with the vocals, and each member has a shining part, especially in the closing bars. “Best Mistake” and “Mr. Bang Bang” follow a similar trend, with a rap opening the song and then a much stronger combination of dance and R&B. It definitely feels like they were tracks made to let the rappers shine on an album that is very vocal-focused for all the members.
Instantly, “One More Kiss” feels different, starting stronger and with a more upbeat tempo from the opening bars, bringing the rapping verses in very quickly. While the pre-chorus slows down, it only serves to make the chorus feel even bolder and fit perfectly within the song’s melodic spectrum.
If the music video for “Without Wings” feels like it references past releases, “Cross My Mind” begins with a melody that feels like the introduction of “[Believer]” which was released for Kingdom. Although the intro is soft, the verse starts with a subtle drum beat that transitions into a violin melody, then both instruments together. This creates a dynamic vibe within the song, adding layers and keeping listeners on their toes while keeping something classical and elegant. It is a personal favourite, really allowing the members’ voices to shine with a beautiful instrumental melody. “Too Easily” similarly feels like a follow-up to “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” with a more upbeat tempo and a song that really epitomises the summer feeling.
Ending the album with “REAL FROM THE FAKE” and “Do You Want Me” perfectly defines the overall feel of the album. While the former is a ballad, the latter focuses on a more jazzy genre that makes it perfect for a midnight drive, as it’s such an easy listen. As with the rest of the album, it feels like the rappers are given a platform to shine in “Do You Want Me,” as they open the song with their dulcet vocals. As each member starts singing, it feels like a warm hug, even as Chani comes in with his rap, creating a change of pace midway through the song. It feels like the perfect ending to a celebration of SF9.
SF9 has once again proved their diversity with their second full album. With members Chani, Youngbin, and Hwiyoung appearing in the credits of most of the songs, Tenacity is proof of the group’s growth and influence ten years after their debut. Compared to the group’s earlier releases, the members are all able to shine equally, especially the rappers. While many things have changed for SF9 over the years, their love for performing and the fans will always remain strong.
