We’re Nothing At All, the latest offering from Hong Kong director Herman Yau, is a harrowing dramatic whodunit as Hong Kong is rocked by a suicide bus bombing on Valentine’s Day. As cops endeavour to discover the identity of the culprit, we follow the story of Fai (Anson Kong) and Ike (ANSONBEAN), two gay young men struggling to find their way in a world that chooses not to see them and in some cases, actively rejects them.
Whilst the bombing is the impetus for the film, ANSONBEAN and Anson Kong brings life to two tragic figures who simply yearn for acceptance and connection.
“Some audience members from the LGBTQ+ community build up the courage to come out,” ANSONBEAN tells us.
Between truthful moments of pain, longing and struggle, the film unfolds to bring the audience up close with the lives of these two marginalised characters, and the various figures who orbit them, each with their own struggles and traumas.
“[This role] was a little bit darker,” says Anson Kong. “But I really wanted to work with Herman, and I wanted to take this challenge.”
A tragic film from beginning to end, it’s one that stays with you long after you watch it.
