Filipino idol girl group MNL48 has announced their disbandment after an 8 year journey.
MNL48’s agency, P.O.S Inc., said in a statement on 20 May that the P-pop group will officially cease at the end of May 2026. The decision was reached following “extensive discussions” among parties involved, particularly concerning the sustainability of the group moving forward.
The management added that factors considered in the decision included the “sustainability of the management structure, future operating environment, and various conditions necessary for stable supporting the group.” P.O.S Inc., also said that it had made every effort to support the group ahead of its disbandment.
As gestures of gratitude to fans as MNLoves, the girl group released a recreated music video of “Pag-Ibig Fortune Cookie” on 21 May at 6 PM (Philippine Standard Time). The video was directed by Azlan Lamponi with the production of ATLAST MEDIA. The music video was made in partnership with Enchanted Kingdom, the National Parks Development Committee, and the Department of Tourism. This will serve as the group’s final activity together.
The group’s management announced on 1 January of 2026 that the company name would adapt the name “P.O.S Inc.”. The name was derived from “Pearl of the Seas”, a reference from the Philippines. Management likewise revealed that a new name for MNL48 had been decided in January 2026, although it was never officially disclosed prior on their disbandment.
They have been dubbed as “P-Pop Idol Pioneers”, MNL48 is a sister group of AKB48. It is only the group within the franchise system to debut with exactly 48 members. Among its notable songs are “Pag-Ibig Fortune Cookie” (Love Fortune Cookie), “365 Araw ng Eroplanong Papel” (365 Days of Paper Airplanes), “First Rabbit”, “High Tension”, and “Ikaw Ang Melody” (You Are The Melody)
