Moana 2 Soundtrack: Review

After Moana‘s successful 2016 release, accompanied by songs that are now Disney musical staples, the soundtrack’s release ahead of Moana 2 meant fans could be ready on the movie’s release day.

There is some familiar ground straightaway: as with the first movie, Moana 2’s soundtrack includes many songs that are in a Polynesian language and continues to build on what came before in the first movie. It continues to keep the language important and a central focus during many of the songs, a highlight of the soundtrack.

Even without Lin Manuel Miranda’s magic touch, certain tracks stand out: “We’re Back” is an early song that effectively reintroduces Moana and her story, reminding listeners about happened in the first movie while also introducing where the characters have been since. With more listens, the song easily gets stuck in your head, a must for every Disney musical.

“Beyond” is a great showcase for both Moana’s growth and that of actress/singer Auli‘i Cravahlo’s. As Cravahlo sings, you can hear how her voice has grown stronger and the notes she carries are impressive. It’s an incredibly enjoyable aspect of the song as it works well showing how Moana has truly grown from a child into an adult.

While other songs in the soundtrack come and go, overall it is a showcase for Cravahlo’s voice. She has both solo and ensemble songs, and her voice works well in every single one. She even also shows off her pop chops with the end credit version of “Beyond.” If you aren’t particularly a Moana fan, the soundtrack is worth listening to just to appreciate the actress’ vocal growth. For Moana fans, the Moana 2 soundtrack will keep fans happy by bringing back familiar themes from the first one and adding new ones.

Moana 2 is out now in theatres.
