Filipino-American singer Olivia Rodrigo officially released the remix for her song “Expectations” featuring Chappell Roan. The track was first released on Olivia’s 2026 album You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So In Love, and the remix comes with a colourful music video, aesthetically 1980s-inspired to match the heavy new wave inspiration in the song. Here, Olivia and Chappell compete on a Family Feud pastiche, among other game show homages.
Chappell, who is a lesbian, naturally brought a sapphic twist to the dance-rock stomper. For one, the entire second verse is changed so she’s singing about a female love interest instead of a man. The new verse is sonically revamped as well, introducing cool chiptune touches and a faster drum groove. Even better, Chappell gets to talk about romancing women in the pre-chorus and chorus. As she declares “I’m not dating any girl with a fake job” and her other expectations for women in the latter section, Olivia is singing along, adding higher harmonies.
The pair’s musical chemistry further blazes in the bridge and final chorus. Many fans have noted that the original bridge sounds a lot like Chappell due to its gritty, stylised vocals, though Olivia’s live performances have definitely proven that it’s her voice in that section. Seeing Chappell singing along to the “Expectations” bridge in the MV just feels so right nonetheless. Olivia’s final chorus ad-libs are also replaced with Chappell’s. Aside from showing off her incredible belting prowess, Chappell says “I’m not kissing no boy, no boy!” and ends the song with beautiful upper range notes: a sustained soprano C (C6) then even higher at a D6!
“Expectations” was already a damn fine song, as to be expected from our generation’s pop-rock superstar Olivia Rodrigo. The remix with Chappell, another Gen Z icon and her longtime friend, takes it to greater (and gayer) heights.
