After more than a year, P-Pop girl group YGIG returned with two singles, “Chicka-chick-a” and “lyk that,” on 7 November. Both songs were produced by ShowBT CEO Geong Seong Han and composed by all of the YGIG members, alongside frequent collaborator JAYBLE. The tracks are presented with fun, kitschy Y2K imagery. Visuals aside, however, is the music any good?

The first song, “Chicka-chick-a,” is an infectious hip-hop cut anchored by a solid chorus. The YGIG members wrote the lyrics in a mix of Tagalog and English (locally known as “Taglish”). Geong’s production is pretty unfocused and cluttered here, adding a lot of sonic flourishes that don’t quite gel together. Despite its flaws, “Chicka-chick-a” is still enjoyable and certainly works as the nightclub anthem it’s meant to be. 

“Lyk that” is far more cohesive. The melodious R&B-pop love song is also written in Taglish. Although muted on the surface, the song features a lot of strong elements that come together beautifully, like synths emulating bright metallophones and a pretty cool brass-driven breakdown near the end.
